At the famous Magpie Café in Yorkshire

The Magpie Café is a world famous fish and chip restaurant housed in a distinctive black and white building overlooking the harbour in the picturesque and historic port of Whitby. The dining room commands excellent views of the harbour, Abbey and St. Mary's Church. The Magpie Café has a long association with fishing and the shipping industry. It was built in 1750 as a Merchants House and during its history was for a time the pilotage where the pilots would wait for orders to bring vessels into the harbour. Long queues of eager customers waiting for a table at The Magpie are a common sight on the harbour side, laying testament to the quality of food on offer. In the busy summer months the restaurant is visited by more than a thousand customers every day.
The ever popular Magpie Café has received many accolades over the years and is regularly featured as one of the best fish restaurants in Good Food publications. The restaurant often receives glowing endorsements from influential chefs and restauranteurs across the UK. Celebrity chef and hugely successful restauranteur and TV presenter Rick Stein has described The Magpie Café as ‘the place that opened my eyes to how good a fish and chip restaurant could be.’
The restaurant had been experiencing problems with their existing EPOS system due to hand held ordering tablets becoming unreliable and back office data generating incorrectly. Ian Robson the owner of the Magpie Café then contacted the team at Tillypad to establish whether a more accurate, reliable solution was available. Following a demonstration of the versatility Tillypad offered Ian decided to proceed with a new EPOS system. The solution offered by Tillypad has included replacing the main POS with the latest in touch screen technology, configuring 11 handheld order tablets and updating the kitchen display units and printers. The Tillypad team also installed a high specification server to ensure fast reliable operation of the new hardware. Much of the set up was completed remotely which allowed the restaurant to continue normal operation with minimal disruption to service.
Lee Rymell, Tillypad UK Operations Director ‘for us The Magpie Café is a very interesting project, we were impressed by the scale of the operation and the amount of footfall the restaurant experiences. The introduction of Tillypad XL with the detailed reports available in the back office has given the managers greater understanding of the day to day operation. This will allow them to make insight driven decisions about the business. Tillypad have demonstrated that the new system installed is a perfect solution for the challenges of a very busy restaurant and we look forward to working with Ian and the team for many years to come.’
